I just read an article on nichepursuits.com titled, Goodbye Exact Match Domains, Hello Brandable Websites and found it a very good read especially for anyone that is following my current series on this exact EMD strategy.
While I agree with much of what the author, Spencer Haws, is explaining in this article – and yes, I like “branding” as well – I think that there is some evidence that EMD’s still rank easier than those domains that are not matched to key phrases.

What are EMD’s and PMD’s?
An EMD or Exact Matched Domain is a domain name that uses the exact keyword or key phrase in the domain name itself. A PMD then is a Partial Matched Domain.
For example, my newest purchase http://howtoworkathome.net is an EMD and will be developed as a site showing people how to work at home or how to start a home based business.
While I agree with Mr. Haws that the overuse of a specific key phrase or keyword will get you slapped by Google (slapped VERY hard…GUILTY I am!) using a key phrased matched domain is still not a bad way to go.
What I have found in several niches is that the overall reason why a site will rank and will rank well has to do with a lot of factors and a site with the EMD will still find it’s way towards the top with less links and overall “votes” from others on the Internet as long as you keep some things in mind.
No matter where you fall on the EMD debate, content is still one of the most valuable aspects as to whether or not a site will find its way to the top of the SERP’s and not just any content.
In the “old” days, you could go out and get a site with a great key phrase and know that within a few days your site would start ranking very well…much of the time with very little content, if any (I once ranked for a key phrase just by setting up a WordPress site by just setting up the site…I still had the default sample pages and posts listed) on the site itself.
Today things are different!
If you think that you are going to go out there and create a well ranking blog or website based solely on an EMD or PMD you are wrong.
Google, like all search engines, wants to rank the Most Relevant sites at the top of their search results and this is something that you will want to keep in mind as you build your site, your brand and yourself up as a marketer.
No matter what, you DO NOT want to be the person out there that builds a reputation as a someone that creates junk content to put on their site.
Remember, this is YOUR real estate in cyberspace and if you do not want to start all over again – Yes, I have experience with this – then I suggest you create the best and most valuable content that you possibly can and let that be your legacy.
Whether or not you decide to use an exact matched domain or not is never going to be as important and your content OR your activity in posting on your site.
That’s right…those that are active, posting videos, podcasts and articles on their blogs are going to still get a huge boost just because they are active.
One of the problems with the EMD situation is that so many marketers would go out there and find exact matched domain names for good key phrases, put a bunch of content on there, rank their sites and then vanish…on to the next one!
While this strategy did work very well for quite a few years, and still can with very low competition key phrases, when you are trying to rank for key phrases that draw lots of visitors through the search engines, you will need to be very active on your site.
Keep in mind that someone be it Google, Bing, or your audience is watching you! Make sure that you are creating something that you will be proud of.
While I know that you probably can’t post every single day – especially if you are a part timer – you can always hire someone to write articles to post on your site or you can offer guest authors to post on your site.
Sometimes it just may be much easier for you to make a quick video to post on your site or make an audio recording and post it as a podcast.
Just be active and consistent!

To Use EMD’s and PMD’s or Not to Use Them
While EMD’s and PMD’s no longer have the pull that they once did with the search engines, I wouldn’t necessarily throw these sites or this strategy away just yet.
I for one have found very good success with EMD’s and have very little experience with PMD’s since I just don’t buy them as much.
I will tell you that when my sites rank the best is when I am consistently posting quality content to them, so once again, that is what I would focus most on.
Remember, your site is a big part of your product and everything when it comes to image and the perspective others out there have of you as an online marketing professional. Trust is not an easy thing to come by and breaking that trust with your audience by posting junk is something you don’t want to overcome.
EMD’s and PMD’s can probably give you a good boost especially at the beginning of your career, but you will have to consider other factors as well. The question that you need to think about is do you want to make some money quickly in the short term or would you like to build a career on the Internet?
